A Thin Line

We have seen some pretty small spaces in our time, but nothing compares to the Keret House designed by the architecture firm Centrala. Located in Warsaw, Poland, the Keret House is a whopping four feet at its widest point and 28.3 inches at its thinnest. It is pretty unbelievable that anyone can physically move around in an area that small, but Centrala has designed this as a workspace for Israeli writer Etgar Keret and a studio for young intellectuals

Take a look at the world’s thinnest building below.

According to ArchDaily, “Structurally the house is a simple tri-dimensional steel frame finished with plywood, insulated sandwich panels and styrofoam covered with concrete cloth painted white.”

To make more room the inside stairs can be flattened by a remote control.

What do you think? Could you live here?

Retrofitting the Empire State Building

Imagine retrofitting the Empire State Building to create a building with 38.4% less watt and BTU consumption and cutting the carbon footprint by 105,000 metric tons – the equivalent to taking over 20,000 cars off the road. Well Rocky Mountain Institute did just that and we learned how from the owner, Tim Malkin and the founder of RMI, Amory Lovins.

“Eight decades after its completion, a team from the Clinton Climate Initiative, Johnson Controls, Jones Lang LaSalle, and the Rocky Mountain Institute joined with Empire State Building Company to transform The Empire State Building into a modern icon of energy efficiency and sustainability from which the entire world can learn and benefit.”

It will cost millions of dollars for The Empire State Building to become more energy efficient, but within three short years the savings of $4.4 million a year will have covered the cost of the retrofit.

Learn why retrofitting is the best option for our existing buildings by visiting The Empire State Building Sustainability Exhibit.

Aspen Peak Magazine features Hurst Theatre

With one show under their belt, Theatre Aspen’s new tent in Rio Grande Park is praised in Aspen Peak Magazine. Charles Cunniffe Architects has worked for over 10 years on designing a new home for the Theatre and now with shows scheduled throughout the summer, we are so thrilled to see the tent full of theatre-goers and performers alike. Bob and Soledad Hurst’s generous gift combined with John Silich Construction, CCA and the Parks Department – proved that the show must go on!

Thomas Heatherwick: Building the Seed Cathedral

We are so inspired by the conversations coming out of the TED and architect Thomas Heatherwick’s recent talk on his bio-inspired designs and the Seed Cathedral did not disappoint. The Seed Cathedral, designed by Heatherwick, was built to represent the UK in the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. This 20-metre (over 65 feet) high building was constructed from 60,000 transparent 7.5-metre long optical strands, each strand was embedded with a seed in its tip. The award-winning Cathedral was a popular exhibit at the Expo, with over 70 million people entering its doors to see the design’s incredible illumination from within.

The Heatherwick Studio used the Seed Cathedral as a platform to showcase the work being done by the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew and their Millennium Seedbank. This design won the prestigious RIBA Lubetkin Prize (RIBA) from the Royal Institute of British Architects for the most outstanding work of international architecture.

Behind the Scenes at the Hugo Boss Shoot

Recently one of our homes designed on Red Mountain in Aspen was the backdrop to a Hugo Boss photo shoot. Utilizing the home’s dry-stacked sandstone, mahogany siding and steel, the fashion photographer capitalized on the contemporary architectural details and materials.

Take a look at some of the images shot on the photo shot below.
