What Is West Coast Modernism?

What is West Coast Modern? Architect Cathy Johnson describes West Coast Modernism as “a bit more approachable, it’s not afraid to have some sand tracked in from the beach.” The independent film “Coast Modern“, by Mike Bernard and Gavin Froome, takes a look at “West Coast Modern” homes sprinkled along the Pacific North West coastline from Los Angeles all the way north to Vancouver. These homes prove that architecture can become one with the environment.

According to the filmmakers, “This relaxed journey takes us across three generations of Modernist architecture, all finding beauty in their own times, and all taking us back to the basics of true living – a sense of place, light, and a deep connection to the earth.”

Coast Modern will be shown at the Architecture & Design Film Festival in New York on October 19th and 20th at 9:30pm. To learn more about this film visit Coastmodernfilm.com.

Mountain Rescue Aspen

We are excited to be working with Mountain Rescue Aspen, who is looking to expand their facilities. The new space will allow MRA to house their equipment and rescue vehicles at the facility and not off-site like it is currently doing. It will also house a training area, control room, a kitchen, ample storage, and an area for their volunteers to rest after a long night in the field.

As stated in the Aspen Daily News, “MRA has outgrown its small headquarters and is now able to build a new facility largely because of a $1.5 million grant given last year to the organization from Oklahoma resident Lynda Cameron, who was rescued by a MRA team after her father’s plane crashed in the Capitol Creek Valley during a snowstorm on Nov. 27, 1977. Her father, C.B. Cameron, was killed in the crash; Lynda and four others, including her mother, brother and the pilot, were rescued.”

Mountain Rescue Aspen is a “volunteer organization dedicated to saving lives through backcountry rescue and mountain safety education.” To learn more about MRA visit their website.
