Richard Neutra – One of Our Many Inspirational Architects

Every architect has their list of admired Architects. For Charles Cunniffe, and many of the designers and architects on our team, Richard Neutra is high on that list.

Richard Neutra, who spent most of his career in Southern California, is an Austrian American architect, and one of the most important modernist architects of his time. We have always admired the personal attention he gave to each project, honing in on the clients’ needs and vision vs. imposing his architectural style upon them. This is something we bring into our practice – designing for our clients – not for ourselves.

Tour the Wisp Retreat at Deep Creek Lake on Pinterest!

pinterest-logo-mainIf you haven’t been to Wisp Resort, you should definitely put it on your list of places to go. We were fortunate enough to design a home for some wonderful clients in this stunning mountain area of Maryland.

While vacationing in Beaver Creek, Colorado, a couple from Pittsburgh saw our ad in a regional design magazine. Intrigued by the imagery, they contacted us to inquire about designing their home in the beautiful Wisp Report in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. None of the existing real estate in Wisp Resort met their desired level of design or craftsmanship, so together with the builder we sought out to bring their design aesthetic to this unique resort.

Keeping the Balance in Architecture

Architects and designers are fond of the notion that architectural design is often made up of simple building blocks like rectangles, triangles, and circles. This may be a bit of an oversimplification but the idea does reveal one of the essential truths of architecture – a design should include a variety of and balance between different shapes.

For instance, a house composed of only rectangular shapes takes on a totally new completion with the addition of a peaked roof or arched, curved edges. Similarly, a circular and domed sun room will be far more visually interesting with the addition of a rectilinear element.

The real beauty of this concept is that it can be incorporated into any style of house. While traditional Tudor-style houses will usually use the “eyebrow window” to achieve the effect, contemporary houses can choose from a variety of features including slanted-roofs, curved arches and even hemispherical rooms.

The possibilities are almost endless when it comes to balance in architectural design. For more information on this and other interesting architectural topics, please contact us at Charles Cunniffe Architects, today.
