Help Us Support the Aspen Animal Shelter

bulldog Did you know that animal shelters in Aspen offer volunteering opportunities? If you have time to spare this spring, drop by the Aspen Animal Shelter to brush the cats, walk the dogs, and wash used feeding bowls. The staff — and the animals — would welcome your services with open arms.

Why support Aspen Animal Shelter? Aside from being a self-sustaining shelter that gets most of its income from The Aspen Boarding Kennel, it’s also a strong supporter of the no-kill advocacy. Instead of euthanizing homeless animals, it provides a sanctuary for abandoned cats and dogs — and the occasional rabbits and birds — in and around Aspen, and prepares them for adoption.

Prior to release to their new owners, all animals are neutered and vaccinated. They are also implanted with a microchip for identification.

If you wish to volunteer or maybe even adopt a pet, take note that the shelter is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For inquiries, call (970)5440206.

But before you adopt a pet, make sure your home is pet-friendly! We at Charles Cunniffe Architects can redesign your home to make it an ideal place to live in for domesticated animals. Contact us to learn about our services.

Get to Know: Aspen Junior Golf

As part of our series featuring local groups and organizations who work to serve the Aspen community, we felt it was pertinent to honor an organization that does much to encourage the young people in and around Aspen. Aspen Junior Golf was started in the late-1980s to make sure every child interested in the game of golf would have access to equipment, instruction, and green time. The organization began with just 20 participating juniors and now reaches more than 375 youths each season.

The program is, as they word it, “designed to administer programs that facilitate mentor ship, emotional and intellectual development and the importance of striving for excellence in both academics and sports.” Examples of some of the programs and services offered by Aspen Junior Golf include:

  • Providing golf equipment for children who need it
  • Access to a practice facility, including a driving range, putting green, bunker and chipping area seven days a week
  • Skills challenge days
  • Discounted golfing fees
  • Golf clinics
  • After school programs

Aspen Junior Golf is also dedicated to other youth-oriented programs and charities. This is evident in the fact that they’ve donated more than $600,000 to those causes over the past 22 years.

As the Architects of the Aspen Municipal Golf Clubhouse and Nordic Center,  Charles Cunniffe Architects commends the founders and supporters of Aspen Junior Golf.

No Mountain Home Is Complete Without the Right Fireplace

Picture the perfect day at your mountain home. You spend a full day skiing outdoors, you jump in the hot tub to recharge your muscles, and then you grab a blanket and snuggle up in front of your fireplace with a cup of hot cider in hand. Notice anything in the picture? Could this day have been complete without the ideal fireplace.

We think the planning of a true mountain home isn’t thorough without these stone fireplace designs in mind:

  • Linear fireplaces are a contemporary way to illuminate a room and are also great for tighter spaces.
  • For a more rustic appeal, stacked-stone fireplaces are the perfect choice. An oversized fireplace immediately becomes the focal point of any room.
  • A dark fireplace nicely contrasts with light decor and neutral features, such as a cream-colored furnishings.
  • Outdoor fireplaces are ideal for enjoying the scenery. Any type of stone naturally compliments its surroundings.

For more information on designing the perfect fireplace in your home, please contact us at Charles Cunniffe Architects. We are dedicated to quality architecture and design.
