CCA’s Marks the 100th Year Anniversary of Bauhaus

This year, we are thrilled to be sponsoring the 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus Exhibit. The celebration will be held in Aspen from February to August and features weekly events from workshops and art walk tours to art exhibits and children’s activities, all open to the public.

A modernist art school founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, Bauhaus was for emphasizing the integration and equality of all the visual arts. In 1946, Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer arrived in Aspen, the same year the Aspen Ski corporation opened. The result was a transformation from sleepy mountain town to what we know Aspen to be now.

“Bauhaus was avant-garde experimentation,” says Charles Cunniffe, “and the influence continues today, so we are very excited to be sponsoring it.”

Casual Luxury Mountain Home featured in Robb Report

This month, luxury lifestyle magazine Robb Report, features one of our most spectacular projects, and we couldn’t be more proud of the home and the coverage. Located in Aspen, CO, the 14,000 square foot winter escape, features state of the art architectural upgrades such as: opening the home to the views, refining the interior layout, and vastly improving the home’s lower level.

The overall aim, according to Charles, was to transform a dated mountain home into a place where homeowners could connect to family and nature.

Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the Interior Design firm, Pembrooke & Ives who added key touches such as Kelly Wearstler chairs, a shearling carpet, and rift cut oak bunk beds, that give the home a sense of luxury– and pop of color– without sacrificing the comfort that the family desired.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Virginia Placer Housing

“It’s important to give back to the community that I’ve gotten so much from over the past 40 years. It makes us better people– and it makes us a better firm,” stated Charles in a recent interview with Modlar. This has been a guiding ethos for our firm, led by Charles himself. It was also the impetus for our newly constructed affordable housing project in Telluride, Colorado.

Called Virginia Placer, the project is a combination of communal living, tiny homes and apartment units; designed for Telluride’s residents who are the backbone and soul of this often unaffordable ski town. Comprised of 18 apartment units, a 46-bed Boarding House and 3 Tiny Homes, the project accommodates a mix of incomes, individuals and families. The design team balanced budget, sustainability and livability by incorporating passive solar and ventilation, ample storage, large windows, and durable and maintenance-free materials.

While we love designing luxury homes, we also find it rewarding to give back to our community by designing community-based projects. “If you have the ability to have a positive effect on your community, I think you have an obligation to do it,” says Charles.

Modlar.com Interviews Charles Cunniffe

We all know and love Modlar.com, but have you listened to their podcast ‘The Modern Architect’ yet? The radio show + podcast features weekly interviews with renowned architects, influential industry veterans, and thought leaders who are helping shape design. In this episode, host Tom Dioro sits down with Charles to discuss all things design, early inspirations, culture of design, sculpture, community, and a little philosophy.

In talking about courage,” states Cunniffe, “you need to be courageous enough to be innovative…to try something bigger than yourself. Bigger than the program. Take a risk and put yourself out there. If you’re going to have a positive influence on humanity and your community, you have to have the courage to put your foot in the door and push it open, and hope that you can make a difference with something you have to say or something to show.”

Broadcast live every week on Stanford University’s KZSU and Modlar.com, its a great listen (but please excuse the early technical difficulties).

CCA’s Aspen Glam featured in LUXE Magazine

One of our favorite projects this year is featured in the November/December edition of LUXE Magazine. A collaboration with interior designer (and the homeowners’ daughter) Sterling McDavid, this once dated estate was transformed for Sterling’s father, real estate mogul, David McDavid into a world class retreat, complete with a state-of-art spa, floor to ceiling views, and a stunning collection of pop art.

Snowmass Fire Station Ribbon Cutting

Last week’s Snowmass Fire Station ribbon cutting, was what architects’ dreams are made of.

“Everything was thought through. The thought and planning are phenomenal. You can tell the detail Charles (Cunniffe Architects) went through. And they came in ahead of time and on budget – what can you say about that?” stated Snowmass mayor, Markey Butler.

Too see over 150 residents touring the completed station made us all appreciate our profession and how great it is to work in our community. Thank you Town of Snowmass Village for the great opportunity to work with you all! To learn more, click here.

CCA’s Charles Cunniffe Talks Sustainable High Tech Mountain Homes with AD.COM

We are always honored to be featured in the press, so when Architectural Digest wanted to discuss the modern mountain home, Charles was thrilled to discuss the topic. To that, we’re so proud that AD selected to feature Elk Peak Ranch and Aspen Park – two projects recently completed by our team.

Whether it be more open floor plans and maximizing views or  incorporating sustainable and high tech gadgetry, we loved being a part of this in depth discussion with one of the leading architecture and design magazines. “Cunniffe’s ability to infuse his projects with such a consistent feel comes, no doubt, courtesy of his deep familiarity with the vernacular styles in the areas where he works” stated Architectural Digest writer Hadley Keller.
