When a client approaches an architect with an extensive program for their multi-generational family, and wants the house to be “green”, eyebrows are raised. This client was different, and has charged our team to design a LEED silver certified home spanning 15,000 square feet.
To meet the challenge, the team has designed a low profile, 6-bedroom home with ample indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces and sophisticated HVAC systems. Quartzite stone, Resysta siding, reclaimed timbers, steel and glass form the low maintenance exterior. A 42kw solar field, geothermal loop field and roof mount solar hot water panels contribute to the renewable energy potential.
Concrete and reclaimed woods are utilized on the interior. Deep overhangs, massive expanses of glass and curved walls bring responsive forms into the mix. The iPod Savant system allows the owners to control the climate, lighting, shades, sound and security system from anywhere in the world. Windows and shades open & close automatically to maximize seasonal solar gain and passive ventilation; to maintain optimal interior climate without excessive energy use.
The design respects the existing ditch, which we incorporated into the design. A theatre with 16’ screen, a wine cellar, billiards room, generous guest suites, a bunkroom, and a lavish master suite separated by a glass bridge complete the home.
The design successfully achieves the Owner’s program while utilizing a currently disturbed area, which respects respecting the surrounding ranch land and reducing the overall environmental impact.
