Charles Cuniffe, FAIA

Founding Principal

Charles Cunniffe, FAIA, is the visionary founder and Principal of Charles Cunniffe Architects. With over four decades of experience, Charles has established a reputation for creating timeless and innovative designs that seamlessly integrate with their natural surroundings. His educational background includes degrees in Architecture, Fine Arts, and Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, supplemented by studies at prestigious institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Brown University.

Charles’s career in Aspen began in 1979 when he was enlisted to oversee the renovation and expansion of the historic Hotel Jerome. This project set the stage for the founding of CCA in 1980. Since then, Charles has led the firm to national prominence, known for its commitment to sustainability, community involvement, and client-centric design. Under his leadership, CCA has received numerous accolades, including multiple awards from the American Institute of Architects and features in top-tier publications such as Architectural Digest, the Wall Street Journal, Veranda and Elle Décor.

Beyond his professional achievements, Charles is deeply involved in community service. He has served on the boards of various organizations, including Jazz Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado Mountain College, River Bridge Regional Center and countless others. His contributions to the field of architecture were recognized in 2017 when he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Charles’s passion for architecture is matched by his love for travel, which continually informs his work with a rich appreciation of global cultures and design traditions. Equally, Charles draws passion from his Aspen surroundings, which he enjoys with his wife and two children.
