CCA Participates in School Mentorship Program

Meet Elsa, a budding design professional, who is working with our very own Karen Woods in the 6th grade mentorship program at Aspen Middle School. Karen, who is a Project Manager with CCA, also fell in love with architecture at a young age, 7th grade, when she was given a chance to spend a day in an architect’s office in Boulder Colorado, as part of a career orientation program.

Each week they meet and go through various parts of the design process. Elsa’s final project will be schematic design of a home on an existing lot in the valley. She is learning about siting the home for views and efficient building systems, gathering imagery of styles that she likes, visiting existing construction sites, and exploring the process of design and documentation. It is so refreshing to have interest from such a bright, thoughtful young lady in the office.

Mountain Rescue Aspen is Taking Shape!

After receiving a generous donation by a family member who was rescued by Mountain Rescue Aspen, the organization engaged Charles Cunniffe Architects to design a much needed, new facility.

Mountain Rescue Aspen’s new location across from the Pitkin County Airport, will provide direct access to Highway 82 and the airport when air support is required. The new two-story facility includes a large training space, locker rooms, vehicle shop, emergency command center, map room, boardroom, emergency operations center, bunkrooms and a caretaker apartment. Attached to the facility is a four-bay garage to accommodate rescue vehicle, trailers, ATV’s and snowmobiles.

The two-story facility utilizes varying roof heights, shapes and materials, to reflect Aspen’s mining heritage. Modest penetrations allow for ample views and light to penetrate the building. The facility will utilize low maintenance material such corrugated metal roofing, rough sawn timbers, board and batten metal siding and reclaimed snow fence siding. The south facing orientation of the main gable form provides an ideal opportunity for a solar thermal and PV system.

We are so proud to be involved in such an outstanding community-based project.

Scott’s history in the valley will be instrumental in promoting the American Institute of Architects, as he takes his post as Roaring Fork Valley Area Director.

We wanted to congratulate them both on these appointments.
